“Atlas of Mud” – a Sundays@7 Staged Reading

July 22, 2010 By Matt Leave a Comment

Join Whistling in the Dark each Sunday evening at 7pm for another staged reading. This Sunday July 25th we will be hearing Atlas of Mud by Jennifer Fawcett (of then after water fame) directed by Matt Slaybaugh. The reading’s cast includes Emily Bach and Susie Gerald (both seen in Attempts on Her Life), Tim Dougherty (To Kill a Mockingbird), and Joe Bishara (no stranger to fans of Phoenix Theatre and soon to be seen in Actors’ Theatre’s Dark of the Moon).

Ten years after the world flooded and people fled to the boats, the desperation to find land has become lethal, but the satellites still see nothing but water. Guarded by the military, one boat holds special cargo: seeds to plant when land is found, birds to find the land, and a child called Mud. A mythical allegory about finding hope in a world turned unrecognizable.

Atlas of Mud explores the human dimensions of global warming. Fawcett’s compelling drama won the 2008 Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival National Science Playwriting Award.

Why a Musical? Ask President Obama.

July 22, 2010 By Matt 1 Comment

Monday night, Michelle Obama hosted the sixth in a series of White House evenings celebrating “the music that helped shape America.” The list of performers included Nathan Lane, Idina Menzel, Audra McDonald, Brian d’Arcy James, Chad Kimball, Tonya Pinkins, Marvin Hamlisch, Karen Olivo and Assata Alston.

“Why a musical?” is a question we’ve been getting a lot lately, and I think our President has done a truly admirable job of answering it.

At its heart, it’s the power of a story -– of love and of heartbreak; of joy and sorrow; singing witches, dancing ogres. Musicals carry us to a different time and place, but in the end, they also teach us a little bit of something about ourselves. It’s one of the few genres of music that can inspire the same passion in an eight-year-old that it can an 80-year-old –- and make them both want to get up and dance. It transcends musical tastes, from opera and classical to rock and hip-hop. And whether we want to admit it or not, we all have the lyrics to a few Broadway songs stuck in our heads. (Laughter.) July 6, 2010 By Matt Leave a Comment

Available Light has friends all over. Right now, two of our favorite playwrights (Sean Christopher Lewis and Jennifer Fawcett) who normally reside in Iowa City, are in Africa, teaching and learning.

Lucky for us, Sean’s been blogging frequently. Jenn recently sent out a delightful email with some notes and thoughts on their journeys. Here’s one of my favorite excerpts. [Read more…]

Practicing Dreams

July 1, 2010 By AVLT 1 Comment

Three and half hours ago, I sat in a rehearsal room in the Riffe Center and listened to our incredible cast sing through Merrily We Roll Along for the first time.  Pam, our lovely and talented Musical Director, had broken it down a few times and worked through some of the solo lines.  Then she paused, turned to the cast and said, “Let’s give that section a try.”  And one by one the cast began to sing.  And I damn near could have cried.

Instead, I broke into a shit-eating grin. [Read more…]
