Behind the Scenes with the “Cock” photo shoot

April 21, 2014 By Ian Short Leave a Comment

The idea for the “Cock” photo shoot came to me when I was thinking of the Vanity Fair photo spreads of the “Mad Men” and “Sopranos” casts. Like these…

I had a mental image of David Glover’s character lounging on a recliner, with Elena and Drew standing somewhere near him. For some reason I pictured them all bloody and bruised. Since we’ve been going with a boxing match metaphor for the show, it seemed like a good photo to tie into the story. I told the idea to Matt and Dave and they set everything up and handled the shoot, along with Acacia Duncan as our makeup artist. It was one brief flash of insight for me, but a collaboration of will and talent to make it a reality.

Here are some Instagram posts from our photo session last weekend.

Some thoughts on Feed Your Soul 13

August 31, 2013 By Ian Short Leave a Comment

Last week we had our annual Available Light Theatre fundraiser, called “Feed Your Soul” and it was our most successful one yet. It was also my favorite one, not for monetary reasons, but for the people who came to support us and the performance we shared with them.

A few weeks ago, Matt Slaybaugh, our artistic director, came up with the idea of altering a one man show he had written a few years ago into a piece the whole company could do. We would only have a couple of rehearsals to figure it out and most of us were swamped with “bobraushenbergamerica” and our various day jobs, but we jumped at the chance to do it. Why? Because Matt’s one man show, called “The Absurdity of Writing Poetry” embodies everything we go through as artists.

bobrauschenbergamerica rehearsal blog

August 11, 2013 By Ian Short Leave a Comment

Here’s a blog post from July 31st:

“Last week we started rehearsals for Available Light’s first show of the 2013-14 season. It’s called bobrauschenbergamerica. It was written by Charles Mee, and first directed by Anne Bogart and performed by the SITI Company in 2003. One of the goals of the show is to put the artist Robert Rauschenberg’s collage work into a theatrical form. There are a lot of discarded objects (a favorite motif of the artist), many different uses of chicken and some square dancing. There are also lovely monologues about how different people view the world and try to cope with it in their own way. It has several purely theatrical moments, which are a joy to watch and to participate in. Also, there’s a martini slip and slide.”

Teachable Moments

July 31, 2013 By Ian Short Leave a Comment

New blog post up:

“I directed my first big musical for Gahanna Community Theatre (GCT), back in 2005. It was “The Music Man” and it had a cast of 80 people, not to mention the orchestra, crew and volunteer staff. They hired me on the basis of my history with them (my very first show was GCT’s “Oklahoma!” when I was a teenager) and my experience in New York as a professional actor. However, nothing could have prepared me for the sheer mass of people, waiting for me to tell them what to do. I had no idea what I was getting into, so I just charged ahead with the confidence of the blissfully ignorant…”

Blog post from Ian Short

July 25, 2013 By Ian Short Leave a Comment

Hey everyone,

I’ve been writing a weekly blog for the past month. Here’s an excerpt from the latest one. You can read the rest of it on my website below…

I have spent most of my life studying and practicing live theatre. I did a couple of commercials when I was in college and some TV and film work in New York (a guest spot on One Life to Live and a recurring part on New York News), but I mostly pursued work in the theatre. Since moving back to Columbus, my main focus has been stage work with an emphasis on developing new ensemble pieces. I’ve done a lot of commercials and industrial films in the last several years, but I’ve also been acting in more and more independent films and shorts, as digital cameras and streaming make film work more accessible to artists. I find both mediums to be very different, but enjoyable in their own way.

The Actor’s Perspective | Ian Short – Mr. Darcy, Mr. Collins

January 29, 2013 By Ian Short Leave a Comment

On the Book…
I first read the novel Pride and Prejudice to prepare for the role of Mr. Darcy and Mr. Collins. It kind of felt like a homework assignment at the time and I made a plan to read one chapter a day, whether I wanted to or not. I read three chapters the first day (they’re short) and immediately became so invested, that I finished the book two days later. It’s one of my favorite books now, and I’m looking forward to reading it again soon.

Working with Daniel Kramer…
After reading the novel, I had a newfound appreciation for the play that Daniel had created. If you are well versed in the story and come to see this play, you will find almost nothing has been lost in this translation. He captures all of the humor, the deep personal relationships and the strict rules governing society at the time. He also manages to interject various external sources, such as Jane Austen’s personal letters, blog posts about the book, and even the merchandising (t-shirts, comic books, coffee mugs, etc.). All of these peripheral sources enhance the story being told, rather than distracting from it.

Favorite Scene…
It’s a tie between Darcy’s first proposal and when Darcy and Elizabeth meet at Pemberly. The proposal scene is a joy for an actor to play. It’s a confession of love, a vicious rejection and a heated argument where the two characters reveal all the things they have been thinking and feeling about the other. It is beautifully written dialogue, and the emotions underneath are sincere and powerful.

The second scene, where Darcy surprises Elizabeth and her relatives while they are visiting Pemberly is enjoyable because I get to shift gears with the character and reveal a different side to Darcy. I get to show how he’s grown over the months since seeing Elizabeth. I personally enjoy softening the sharp edges of the character I had been portraying earlier in the show.

On working with Available Light Theatre…
As a founding company member, I have worked with the entire cast, and our director, on multiple productions and each show is a new and exciting experience. We all know each other very well, but we don’t let that familiarity become complacency. We are constantly helping each other learn and grow as artists. One of the unique aspects of doing this show is that Eleni has incorporated our offstage friendships into the production. In the play, the actors sometimes break character and comment on the scene. We’ve made these diversions very playful and in terms of attitude, we’ve let a lot of our own history with each other seep in.
