Here are more than a few highlights from a review overflowing with them…
Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, which opened tonight in the Riffe Center, is shaped as a modern rock concert led by a genuine star…
If the propulsive energy and rowdy precision of an expertly cast ensemble were all, then Available Light Theatre’s area premiere of the recent Broadway musical might rank as the show of the season…
Nick Lingnofski owns the title role… While the script gives many actors a chance to take over Jackson’s voice or stance, Lingnofski provides the charismatic and conflicted through line…
Drew Eberly’s foppish Martin Van Buren, Ian Short’s loyal-Indian Black Fox and Eleni Papaleonardos’ wheelchair-bound lesbian narrator rank high among the supporting players by blending comedy with a spritz of drama…
Director Matt Slaybaugh and musical director Pam Welsh-Huggins navigate the script’s many anachronisms and seductive flourishes with operatic flair…
…a savage indictment of Jackson for his decision to forcibly relocate most Indian tribes, leading to countless deaths on the “Trail of Tears”…
In the rebellious spirit of but a step beyond Hair, Tommy, Spring Awakening and Hedwig and the Angry Inch, this is a new-generation musical…
The musical made my companion feel old, she said, but here and there during the most galvanizing songs and scenes, I felt surprisingly young…
Whatever one’s quibbles about the show, and you’re bound to have some, Avaliable Light rocks…
Check out some bad-ass photos from Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson.

For our 2012-13 Season, AVLT has engaged six Columbus artists to create posters (in collaboration with our graphic designer, Michelle Whited) for our productions, combining their personal styles with tributes to six iconic Marvel Comics covers.
First up, Drew Jones created the poster for Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson in tribute to The Avengers #4, the classic first appearance of the modern day Captain America character, from 1964. Here’s the original…
And here’s Drew and Michelle’s creation for our show…
See more of Mr. Jones’ art (note: most of it doesn’t look like comic books) at his blog.

Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson was featured in the Alive’s cover story – “Fall Arts: 25 Can’t Miss Events in Columbus” on September 9. Bring your copy to the theater and the cast will be glad to autograph it for you.
Need more? Don’t miss the Q+A with director Matt Slaybaugh in this week’s issue.
In this video, actors and creators from the NYC production talk about angst and South Park.
Check out this great video from PBS, in which writer (and director of the NYC production) discusses the show.
Note: The footage in the video is from their production, not ours. Ours will be even cooler.
