This is one of my all-time favorite online hip-hop discoveries. In this video, LL Cool J plays live (with Cut Creator) in a high school gym in Maine. Whoa. (And yes, I know that some of you are saying, “Wait, LL Cool J used to be a rapper.” Very funny.)
These people in Maine were not quite ready for the Brooklyn fastest-rising export, but LL took it stride, giving a lesson in hip-hop basics that’s still worthwhile for anyone not well-versed in the Nine Elements. He actually starts with “this is called rappin’ and scratchin'” and asks how many people have ever seen rapping before. As Cut Creator works, LL explains what the DJ is doing, pointing out the two turntables and the “disco mixer.” He also advises the crowd to get away from the speakers, since “it’s gonna be loud.” Later on, he notes “this is rappin’, right here.”
And the crowd is sitting on the floor for most of the time.
Can you tell I’m excited about this? It’s a treasure. Just watch it.
8:42 — “What about those sounds I be makin’ with my mouth? How many of you’ve heard of the human beat box.” SO GREAT!
